A Prayer for Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Gracious God,
We thank You for the life and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose dream called us to see one another as You see us—equal, beloved, and worthy of dignity.
Today, we remember Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s struggle for equality, justice, and dignity for African Americans that inspired so many other reform movements that seek to highlight the plight of the oppressed in society. We pray that all of those in civil and religious authority be reminded that we all have been created in your image, and that there is an intrinsic dignity in each of us that calls for uplifting every man and woman, young and old.
Grant us the courage to speak truth in the face of injustice, the patience to work for peace without losing hope, and the compassion to love even when it is difficult. Help us to build bridges where there are walls, to listen where there is silence, and to act where there is need.
May Dr. King’s dream live on in our hearts and in our hands, until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.
Amen.
