Fifth Sunday of Lent

The weekly Newsletter of

ALL SOULS ECC

A Welcoming Family of Faith!

As we begin our holy season of Lent, our focus as individuals and as a parish community is to do our best in following the disciplines of this holy season: prayer, fasting and alms giving.

Prayer – select a special person in your life each week and say a little prayer each day for that individual.

Fasting – select a meal one day of the week where you will eat a little less, great for weight loss and healthy for the body as well.

Almsgiving – save your spare change in the All Souls plastic container which will assist us in our outreach programs.

Together as a parish community let us not only support one another with the commitment to regular attendance on Sunday but also in our journey together through Lenten sacrifices to

Easter joy.

This weeks readings and question of the week:

Take time to mediate on God’s word and prepare for worship this Sunday. And as you meditate on them, consider the Question of the Week: Having come this far in Lent, am I ready to die to my old ways and embrace new life?

Ezekiel 37:12-14

Psalm 130:1-8

Romans 8:8-11

John 11:3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45

John 11:25-26

Jesus told her,
“I am the resurrection and the life;
whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,
and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.

God’s solution is not to preserve the dead- but to raise them. What Jesus did with Lazarus, he is willing to do with us. Which is good for us to know, for what Martha said about Lazarus can be said about us, “There was a bad smell”. The human race is dead, and there is a bad smell. We have all been dead and buried for a long time. We don’t need someone to fix us up, we need someone to raise us up! In the muck and mire of what we call life, there is death, and we have been in it so long we’ve grown accustomed to the stink. But Christ hasn’t and call us to be raised to new life!
